Introduced in 1864, as Generals Grant and Lee traded important Civil War victories, these bronze 2 pieces helped make change during a severe wartime coin shortage. Mintages of 2 pieces, struck only at Philadelphia, quickly declined beginning in 1866 and were issued for circulation for the last time in 1872.
