Ludwig Michalek (1859-1942) - Goethe's Reisewagen. Etching. 1911. Books - NatureA hand coloured etching of 'Goethe's Reisewagen' ('Goethe's Travelling Carriage'), dated 1911. Signed beneath the plate. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's (1749 1832) reisewagen was a horse drawn carriage known as the 'Batarde'. He famously used it for his journeys, notably his "Italian Journey". The 'Batarde' is now preserved at the Goethe National Museum in Weimar. The work is housed in a later gilt frame which shows some light signs of wear but displays
